Chapter Fifteen

I awoke to loud voices across the hall. I got up and went to the door. Jocelyn was yelling at someone in her office.

“That was the worst thing you have ever done. It wasn’t a joke. It was illegal. And you brought it to my doorstep?”

“But look how it turned out. Haven’t you had a wonderful new adventure?”

“Adventure? That was a kidnapping. You’ll be thrown out of the military. Your whole career will be a fiasco. What possessed you? If she presses charges, I’ll have to represent her, and you know I’ll win. This is the most ludicrous and humiliating thing you’ve ever done. Why do I welcome you into my house?”

It was Jocelyn and Regina, arguing…about…were they talking about me? Kidnapping? Illegal? Humiliating?

“Because I always help you set the best scenes and bring you incredible new girls.”

“Well, this was not one of them.”

“You didn’t enjoy beating her and fucking her?”

“But now I’ve got to apologize and get things straightened out. Lord knows how much this is going to cost me. I should take that out of your hide.”

The office door opened, and Jocelyn stepped into the hallway. She was dressed in her long blue robe. Her eyes widened in fear when she saw me. She walked past me into her room. Her face was red. With anger? With embarrassment?

“We need to talk. Come in here, please,” she said softly. “Put this on.” She handed me a shirt from in her closet.

I looked up as Regina appeared in the office door. I turned back into the room and took the shirt.

“Have a seat,” she told me as I covered myself. “And button it up. I can’t be serious with you when you’re naked, and this discussion will be ultra-serious.” I could see the anger in her eyes. It was so very different from earlier.

I sat down on the corner of the bed as I slid the buttons through their holes.

“First of all, Katherine, I must apologize. You have been the victim of a horrendous game my former friends have been playing. You are not, nor have you ever been, under arrest for carrying drugs. Lieutenant Benik”—she gestured to Regina—“set that up so you and I would meet, and I would bring you here.”

“I knew you’d like each other,” Regina threw in.

“But it was still not right!” Jocelyn paced around her bedroom.

“What?” How was I supposed to handle this information?

“I realize all the anguish you’ve been through, so whatever I can do to try to assuage your suffering, I will do.”

“I’m not under arrest? I won’t go to prison?” My God! This was all a joke? What was she telling me? This was all bogus?

“No, Katherine. You are a free woman.”

What I’d just heard in Jocelyn’s office fell totally into place. I looked at Regina. “You did this to me? You thought it was a joke? You were just playing?”

“I’m sorry, Katherine. It went further than I had expected.”
